ABOUT
Harriet Charles
South Gate Design is operated by South Carolina native, Harriet Charles. I have adored flowers and gardens for as long as I can remember.
My love of flowers and all things lovely comes directly from my mother. As a child, I remember vividly that when the camellias, hydrangeas, roses, forsythia or anything else came into bud or bloom on the family farm in Florence, SC, my mama would arrange them gracefully throughout the house. The vases were just as interesting as the flowers and ran the gamut from cut glass to silver to pottery to jelly jars.
When I'm not among the flowers, you can find me savoring precious moments with family. My other loves and hobbies in no particular order include yoga, photography, attending boot camp, perfectly steamed milk, , venti flat whites, St. Andre cheese, meditation, art museums, iron gates, nubby linen, dappled light, dark chocolate with sea salt and listening to TED talks.
Browsing Anthropologie, flipping through Hermes scarves, wandering through junk stores and exploring blooming plants at nurseries are among my favorite activities..
Going on field trips and traveling make me feel really alive!!!! As Mark Twain said, "Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one's lifetime." Get up and enjoy experiences over things!
Always find time for the things that
make you feel happy to be alive.
